SIGHTSEEING : Abdulaziz Khan Madrassah

Abdulaziz Khan Madrassah - SIGHTSEEING

Abdulaziz-Khan Madrasah is situated in city Bukhara, opposite to the equally renowned madrasah of Ulugbek, forming an essential architectural complex. Madrasah is named in honour of the courageous and generous Abdulaziz-khan, the ruler of the Dzhanid dynasty, the fifth khan of the Bukhara khanate. The madrasah was built two centuries after the construction of the Ulugbek Madrasah. The educational institution of Abdulaziz-Khan seems to have personified absolutely all the skill and mastery of designers of that time, having captivated the most diverse methods and types of decorative design. If you look closely, you can find everything here: colourful majolica, ganch painting, carved marble and tile, tiled mosaic, painting on plaster and even the prominent kundal technique - relief wall painting. The elegant and rich decoration gives the building a distinct feature and deep beauty. There are images of the Simurg - the sacred bird, Chinese dragon, and the full-blown peacock's tail in a variety of patterns. Such drawings categorized by a good relationship relating Bukhara and the countries of the Great Silk Road which can be directly seen in the traditional architecture. Near the madrasah, you will find many tourists fascinated by the entrance portal, which is the most ornamented part of the entire building. Dozens of people groups at the foot of a tall peshtak, trying to discern complex Chinese patterns in it.

SIGHTSEEING : The Ark

The Ark - SIGHTSEEING

The Ark of Bukhara is a massive fortress located in the city of Bukhara, Uzbekistan that was initially built and occupied around the 5th century AD. In addition to being a military structure, the Ark encompassed what was essentially a town that, during much of the fortress' history, was inhabited by the various royal courts that held sway over the region surrounding Bukhara. The Ark was used as a fortress until it fell to Russia in 1920. Currently, the Ark is a tourist attraction and houses museums covering its history.

SIGHTSEEING : Tim Abdulla Khan Trading Dome

Tim Abdulla Khan Trading Dome - SIGHTSEEING

Abdullah-khan II (1533-1598), was the most popular khan of the Shaybanid dynasty. During his reign, commerce and trade were flourishing in Bukhara, as the Khan fight back to unify the Uzbeks under a single Khanate. As the streets became progressively choked with stalls and merchants, authorities came up with a novel idea. To clear traffic jam, the bazaars would be moved off the streets and inside stable trading domes! This way, these “tims” or “shopping tracks” became the first shopping malls. Merchants were assigned their own space to set up their shop, and with thick brickwork walls, temperatures were kept moderate year round. Beams of light illuminate the interior, and the latticework windows provide much appreciated ventilation keeping the Tim Abdulla Khan cool even during brutal Central Asian summers. The Tim Abdulla Khan covered bazaar was built in 1577 as Bukhara’s primary covered market. Also known as “Tim-i Kalan”, or the “Great Market,” it was, and remains, an important site for Uzbekistan’s silk fabric trade. Even nearly 450 years later, carpets and silk fabric are still being sold here, outdating the supposed oldest shopping mall in the world located in Milan by 300 years. Under its central dome and many side galleries there is room for 59 shops, with a total 1,600 sq.mt of retail space. Situated between the trade domes of Toki-Zargaron, and Telpak Furushon, to take advantage of the traffic between them, the Great Market is still benefiting from its strategic location. The streets outside are no longer as busy, and local Bukharans shop elsewhere, but for tourist traffic location is everything. Visitors are not only attracted to the building for what’s being sold inside, but also for the architecture. The large central dome is lined with windows allowing the natural light to come in, and side galleries with domed ceilings also remain well-lit thanks to strategically placed latticework open to the outside. There is an added benefit of good ventilation which makes sure the air remains fresh, even on scorching hot summer days.

SIGHTSEEING : Ulugbek Medressa

Ulugbek Medressa - SIGHTSEEING

Central Asia’s oldest medressa, built in 1417, may be familiar to you as it became a model for many others. The blue-tiled medressa, one out of three built by Ulugbek (the others are at Gijduvan, 45km away on the way to Samarkand, and in Samarkand’s Registan compound), is unaltered and in need of conservation work. The small museum exhibits some great old photos, including one of the Kalon minarets with a chunk blown out of it after the Soviets demolished it in the 1920s. The Ulugh Beg Madrasah has a magnificent iwan with a lancet-arch pishtaq or portal facing the square and the corners are bordered by high minarets. The mosaic panel over the iwan's entrance arch is adorned by geometrical stylized ornaments. In square courtyard you can see the mosque and lecture rooms, fringed by the dormitory cells in which students lived. There you will find deep galleries along the axes originally the Ulugh Beg Madrasah was a two-storied building with four domed lecture rooms at the corners. The madrassah kept at least 100 students in 50 cells under the guidance of the finest scholars of the age both in Islamic and secular sciences, many of them making use of the astronomical instruments stored here before the construction of Ulug Begs observatory. His lecturing of astronomy was his greatest passion, can be seen in the display of azure-blue stars on the 35-metre pishtak (portal). A Kufic inion reads: "This wonderful front is of such a height, it is twice the heavens and of such weight that the spine of the earth is about to grind". Yet its size is balanced by the sheer grace of its design and ceramic tile coating. If you are on Bukhara tour then you should visit Ulugbek Medressa.

Chashma-Ayub Mausoleum - SIGHTSEEING

Mausoleum of Chashma-Ayub is the sacred building located in the heart of Bukhara. Here you can see the mausoleum, a holy spring and Museum of Water which is just added to the place. In 12th century the mausoleum was built by the order of Karakhanid rulers. It was reconstructed several times during the 14th-19th centuries and during the Tamerlane’s reign the mausoleum was completed. The building has four rooms, situated on the East-West axis with each of the room topped with a dome. The western room was built first as a funereal tower the rest rooms were built later. This mausoleum is associated with a legend of the Prophet Job. Once residents of Bukhara were suffered from horrifying desert winds and drought then people prayed Allah for a miracle. And the God answered their requests. At that time the Prophet Job had a trip through Bukhara lands and he struck the ground with his staff and healed water sprang up. The spring saved Bukhara people and from that time they called it Chashma-Ayub, the spring of Holy Ayub. Except for the proportions of the construction, this monument is perfectly decorated, the basic part of which is concentrated on the portal. The most magnetizing place in the general composition of the decoration is ktoba, filled with Arabic inions on a background of botanical ornamentation. While on your Bukhara tour package, this is the place which is worth to visit.

It is located in a lane northeast of the Lyab-i Hauz complex. It is protected as a cultural heritage monument, and also it is a part of the World Heritage Site Historic Centre of Bukhara. SIGHTSEEING : Ismail Samani Mausoleum

Ismail Samani Mausoleum - SIGHTSEEING

The Samanid mausoleum is located in a park just outside the historic urban center of Bukhara, Uzbekistan. The mausoleum is considered to be one of the most highly esteemed works of Central Asian architecture, and was built between 892 and 943 CE as the resting-place of Ismail Samani - a powerful and influential amir of the Samanid dynasty, one of the last native Persian dynasties that ruled in Central Asia in the 9th and 10th centuries, after the Samanids established virtual independence from the Abbasid Caliphate in Baghdad. In addition to Ismail Samani, the mausoleum also houses the remains of his father Ahmed and his nephew Nasr, as well as the remains of other members of the Samanid dynasty.

SIGHTSEEING : Lyabi Khauz

Lyabi Khauz - SIGHTSEEING

Lyabi-Khauz is a small picturesque pond, around which are located several historical monuments, summer cafes and restaurants, shops, and of course, hotels. All this forms the same ensemble Lyabi-Khauz! “Khauz” is translated as a pond, and this small body of water has long since saved the inhabitants of Bukhara from the scorching heat, giving coolness under the shade of mulberry trees grown along the coast. Today, like hundreds of years ago, Lyabi-Hauz saves from the hot sun, and in the evening, it seems, there is a big noisy holiday. Lights are lit, people fill the streets and benches around the pond, and in summer cafes it is difficult to find a free table. At the same time, the Labi-Khauz is quite small - its size is only 36 meters by 42 meters, and its depth reaches 5 meters. The historic ensemble of Lyabi-Khauz includes Kukeldash madrasah (XVI century), khanaka Nadir Divan-Begi (XVII century) and madrasa Nadir Divan-Begi (XVII century). And also, in a minute's walk from the pond are the attractions - the shopping dome Toki-Sarrafon and the Magoki-Attori mosque.

SIGHTSEEING : Magok-i-Attari Mosque

Magok-i-Attari Mosque - SIGHTSEEING

The Magok-i-Attari Mosque located in the historical centre of city Bukhara is an example of an urban mosque in a residential quarter. It is a part of UNESCO World Heritage Site and today the mosque is used as a carpet museum. Digs have discovered the fact that even under the Samanids there was a six-pier mosque, which deceptively was also domed. However, it was rebuilt significantly in the twelfth century the floor level was raised and the main front received a new design that lasts with little damage only. By the 16th century, the wideness of cultural layers had amplified so much that mosque seemed to sink deep into the soil and its front was unearthed only as a result of excavations carried out in the 1930s. The front of the mosque is asymmetrical and to the right it has a portal with a settled vault, fringed with rectangular strips the architectural decor is composed of sheltered bricks which form geometric shapes and tiles of carved terra-cotta bearing vegetation patterns. Carved terracotta is also used in beautifying the pylons and the vaults of the arches, combined with vegetation patterns with labels covered with blue glaze. All in all, the Magok-i-Attori Mosque is an outstanding example of Central Asian architecture during the Kara-khanid epoch.

One of these complexes, burned down by Genghis Khan during the siege of Bukhara, was built in 1121 by the Karakhanid ruler Arslan-khan. The Kalan minaret is the only one of the structures of Arslan-han complex that was kept safe during that siege.

Toqi Sarrofon Bazaar - SIGHTSEEING

Fast beside the Lyabi-Khauz there stands a dome with a cross-road running under it. Small shops are scattered around it. Once there located one of the largest currency exchanges of Central Asia: merchants from India, China and other countries change their money from money-changers, named the sarrafs. The name of the trading dome originated from them. But several centuries later one can only buy carpets, kerchiefs and other souvenirs here.
