Bishops of Turkestan and Tashkent were the originators of the church construction in the early 19th century. Distinct feature of this wooden building is that it was established according to a unique ancient technology, practically without using any nails. This large and striking rectangle piece of greenery is one of central Almaty's most popular strolling and hangout places for all ages. At its heart stands the candy-coloured Zenkov Cathedral. The park is named for the Panfilov Heroes, 28 soldiers of an Almaty infantry unit who died fighting off Nazi tanks in a village outside Moscow in 1941. The Palace of the Republic is situated in the Almaty City Centre at the juncture of Dostyk and Abay Streets and is one of the largest and chief concert halls in not only Almaty but in Kazakhstan too. Built in 1970 and also known by the name Palace Lenin was opened during the 100th birth anniversary gala of Lenin and ever since has become one of the main tourist attractions of Almaty. The Monument of Independence is situated on Republic Square, one of Almaty’s famous squares. Here you can see a replica Golden Man standing on a winged snow leopard.
